Speed Limits on Miami Beach!

It’s time to reflect back on how fast we are heading and how far along we have come. ‘Speed Limits’ is the exhibit running on Miami Beach these days meant to help you do just that. The Wolfsonian-Florida International University celebrates the 100th Anniversary of Italian Futurism in the exhibit by capturing the pace of life through different forms and varieties of media like books and posters, drawings and renderings, clocks and video installations. While the subject of the exhibit is 100 years old when in 1909 the foundation and manifesto of Futurism declared that the ‘beauty of speed’ is enriching the magnificence of the world, this exhibit takes the legacy of Futurist Movement from celebration of speed to the impact of living life in the high lane.

Encompassing in about 200 different works and separated by five categories, each of the exhibits of Speed Limits leads us to thinking about the the influence of hurried-up actions on our everyday life and the consequences of an unstoppable rush we are into in this modern era.

The five domains on which the Speed Limits exhibits are focusing are Circulation and Transit; Construction and the Built Environment; Efficiency;  the Measurement and Representation of Rapid Motion; and the Mind/Body Relationship. Professor Jeffrey Schnapp of Stanford University is the curator of the exhibition which is based on his longtime research on the subject. It’s designed by architect Rene Gonzalez. It’s on view through February 20, 2011 at Wolfsonian-FIU, Miami Beach.

A loving moment between mommy and baby!

Firstly, it’s for the newborn baby giraffe, the newest addition to the Miami Metrozoo family of over 2000 wild and exotic birds and animals and 1200 varieties of plants. The yet to be named, Mother Mia’s first baby seems very healthy and will be monitored by zoo veterinarian for the coming days for its well being. Giraffe babies are between five to six feet tall at birth and weigh around 150 lbs.

But Miami Metrozoo has many more reasons to celebrate its 30th birthday coming up this July 4th. Its officially changing its name to Zoo Miami and along with that will adorn itself in a new look. The new name according to the zoo officials better describes it as a South Dade Attraction and it was time to drop the outdated ‘Metro’ from the name.

To celebrate its birthday, Metrozoo is offering only $5 admission, live music, freebies and many giveaways, for full 3 days from July 3-5.

Miami’s Metrozoo, soon to be called as Zoo Miami is one of the best zoos in the United States. It’s one of the first free-range zoos where exhibits are entirely cage less and their surrounding match their native habitat as closely as possible. Also the weather at Miami allows keeping variety of animals from Asia Australia and Africa like no other zoo in the nation.

It surely promises a full filled day for families, animal and nature lovers and photographers alike.

No Booze on the (Miami) Beach!

Categorized Under: Beaches, Miami No Commented

Miami's Guilty Pleasures !

Sip on your favorite tropical cocktail while tanning and sun bathing in the sands, has been the hottest selling feature of Miami’s ocean front resorts and restaurants, especially the South Beach section of these hospitality joints. But nobody ever bothered to check if it was even legal to bring boozes to the beach. Until recently when City Attorney Jose Smith reviewed the city’s rules and made this law see the light of the day.

After registering hundreds of complaints on littering and drinking this spring break, city attorney officers started looking at the beach liquor sale, and enforced the city’s drinking law, banning consumption and sales of alcohol in public places.

Hotels are allowed to sell alcohol within the hotel premises, but the beachfront patios that line the sand must be alcohol free, as per the rule. David Kelsey, president of the South Beach Hotel & Restaurant Association of Miami however told, reassuring the travelers, that city commissioner is already working on a proposal to issue permits for beach liquor sales, after which it will be business as usual.

Until these hotels at South Beach Miami including upscale Ritz-Carlton, Diano etc get the permit to serve liquor at the beach; it’s a tough job for police officials to keep a tab on travelers coming to Miami in a partying mood.

Italian Film Festival: 60 years of Italian Cinema in five days

A conversation on Italy is never complete without the mention of their gourmet Italian cuisine, Italian sparkling wines and the award winning Italian films. In no specific order; that is. And now you can savor all three at the Italia Film Festa.

Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival, (FLIFF as it is called) is coming up with the first annual Italia Festa starting this Thursday. It’s a 5-day film festival celebrating 60 years of Italian Cinema with an eclectic mix of classic and contemporary. Films that are considered major crowd pullers in this festival are Oscar winning IL Postino and Mediterraneo, both of which won Academy Award in Best Foreign Film category in 1994 and 1991 respectively. The closing night movie is Federico Fellini’s highly acclaimed 81/2 starring Marcello Mastrianni as Fellini’s alter ego. Many believe this classic 81/2 is one of the top ten movies ever made in the history of cinema. There will also be children’s program like Fab, along with many kid’s movies showcased to make this an all rounded event.

Italia Film Festa takes place from Thursday June 3 to Monday June 7 at Cinema Paradiso. And FLIFF members get to see all 60 movies at the discounted price of $75 including meals and before – after parties.

In the same context, International movie lovers are also looking forward to the 8th Annual French Film Festival coming up in Miami by the end of July this year.

Categorized Under: Cities, Miami one Commented

Miami is in the national spot light once again, this time as E! Networks ‘Kourtney and Khloe take Miami’ ready to kick off its season 2, June 13th this summer.

Koutney and Khloe take Miami: Season 2

With eye catching views of Miami beaches from the vantage of Bentley Beach Hotel to unbound scenic treasures of Everglades National Park, fluxed with the three drama queens and their bikini clad fun fight and controversies that we witnessed all throughout season one, this season leaves us even more intrigued and waiting.

Though the rumor on Kim Kardashian leaving LA to make Miami her first home has been cleared on her blog stating Miami would only be a good second home for her, its well known that many Hollywood icons looking out for peace of mind and time away from paparazzi, choose to split their time between Beverly Hills and South Florida Beaches. That includes celebrities like Madonna, Gloria Estefan, Whitney Houston and Oprah Winfrey, to name a few. Some are long term residents while others have Miami as their second or third homes, raising the real estate bar in the area nevertheless.

The sneak preview of season 2 ‘Kourtney and Khloe take Miami’ is already out and floating all over the internet as Kardashian sisters all set to promote the first episode and looking forward to a hit season once again.
